Starting a travel journal.

Smash journals have been around for a while, and I’ve been aware of them but not really understanding much. Now ‘smashing’ (is it called that?!) is pretty much scrapbooking… Having not done it before, I can’t really say that I have any sort of huge love for it, but I do think it looks pretty cool!

Anyway, I was looking for ideas for a travel journal as I’m off on an expedition to Finland in April and I wanted to keep track of what we did. I stumbled across this post and it reminded me of Smash journalling, but at a cheaper price! I bought a few bits last week to start it, and made this video on Friday! It’s a timelapse, and I apologise for the lack of sound! (And my big head, which occasionally gets in the way!)

Now it’s pretty ’empty’ at the moment – I’ve barely started. This week I’m going to write up some information and journal the things that we’ve done for planning. It’ll obviously look better once I’ve been on the expedition and added all the things that I do there! I’m excited to get it going properly! Since discovering this, I’ve watched so many videos about smash journals!

Photo Friday #2

For the second ‘Photo Friday’ I said I would show some photographs from my 52 Weeks project. This project showed my photography improving – there’s a huge difference between the photos in my 365 from 2010, and my 52 Weeks in 2011. I played around with colour and editing more, and I gave my photos more of a sense of ‘me’.

I’ve showed this one because I really like the shallow depth of field. This was my first year in college studying photography, and I really started experimenting with aperture and using manual controls rather than the aperture/shutter priority ones.

Now whenever I go out to take photos of wildlife, there’s always a robin. I really love robins, and I’m actually planning a robin tattoo! Anyway, this one was watching my dad doing the gardening. Robins often hang around when you are working with soil because you tend to bring the worms up – thus the robins getting an easy dinner!
16/52;

This is one of my favourite photos. I managed to entice Charlie into posing with me, by holding a treat out… She stood up to reach for it and I used my remote to take the photo. Brilliant 😉 I just think it looks so funny.I’m not a fan of the editing though, so I’d like to re-take it though to get better colours! (And a better outfit!)
30/52;

Another Charlie photo… She wasn’t really co-operating here, and I’m sure it was sort of a last minute idea. Charlie was hanging around so I just picked her up before the timer went off. I like the square frame though, and I really like the tones that I used. (How scraggly was my hair?!)
33/52;

And the final one! This one just screams ‘summer’ to me. Again, I like the tones that I used.
39/52;

I said I’d started experimenting with my editing, and I think that really shows in all of these photos. Now, I don’t really use so much editing. As I photograph nature/wildlife mostly, I like it to look natural – you don’t want to portray something completely different! The photos above are of a different style, more ‘artistic’ if you will, and I don’t have a problem with editing used in these instances. I’ve really enjoyed looking back at past photos! It’s shows me just how far I’ve come. Next week I’m hoping to have some new photos, but I may show one or two older ones too from the beginning of university.

All Stars Guest Post: The Contemplative Belle

Hello! Today I have a post brought to you by Cissy from The Contemplative Belle about fountain pens… So let’s get to it.

Fountain Pen Writing Joy

Fountain pens were once a common sight. I write with one on a regular basis and am often questioned about them. The curiosity fountain pens arouse in people surprised me at one point but I have come to expect the questions and enjoy sharing the joys of writing with one. I hope in the process I have drawn a few people into the world of fountain pen enthusiasts. There are several reasons I enjoy writing with a fountain pen including the way they glide effortlessly across the paper, the ability to change ink colors so readily, and the beautiful shading and shadowing the inks display on paper.

Fountain pens come in many sizes, shapes, lengths, nib sizes, and fill mechanisms. There is a fountain pen for everyone and at every price point you can imagine. The most important thing for a beginner to think about is what size nib (the metal point you write with) you want and what type mechanism you want. There are extra fine (EF), fine (F), medium (M), broad (B), and several other sized and types of nibs, but those are the basic ones a beginner needs to know about. After choosing the nib size a beginner should choose how the pen will hold ink. There are several different options, the most common for a beginner being a cartridge or converter. A cartridge is the easiest method as it would involve simply replacing a cartridge when the ink is empty. A converter is my choice. It provides the ability to change ink colors at any time.

However, it does require you buy bottled fountain pen ink and refill the pen on a regular basis. How often depends on how much you use the pen. It is as simple as placing the nib into the liquid ink and twisting the tip of the converter and having it draw the ink up into the barrel. It can be a messy process and I typically have a drop or two of ink on my fingers, I wear it like a badge of honor. I own more ink than I would want to admit and belong to Ink Drop, a program where Goulet Pens sends 5 ink samples each month. I love getting my Ink Drop in the mail to be surprised by fun colors that are themed and always a pleasant surprise.

Writing with a fountain pen is a pleasure as the ink just glides onto the paper. Holding the pen at a 45 degree angle and moving your arm, instead of just your wrist, writing becomes effortless and I find my handwriting to be better and almost musical. The pressure callous I once had on my finger is now a distant memory as writing is once again a joy instead of a chore. There is nothing quite like a personally written letter and one written with a fountain pen whose letters are shaded is a piece of art.

If you have never written with a fountain pen it is something I would recommend you try. There are many wonderful pens and inks available. My favorite is the LAMY Safari fountain pen. It is a great choice for a beginner. I would recommend Ink Nouveau blog for more information on fountain pens and to answer further questions. I hope you join us in the world of fountain pen enthusiasts and rediscover the joys of handwriting letters, journals, and anything else you can think of.

I love the look of fountain pens, but have never tried one… Some really good information here if you’re looking to try it out! Is anyone here a regular user of fountain pens?

A helping hand…

A few days ago, I blogged about the first divider that I had made for my Filofax. (You can find that post here!) It’s really easy, and you don’t need anything special!

I used:

    pen/pencil
    card
    printed photos
    pritt stick
    scissors
    holepunch
    wrapping paper
    washi tape

Well today I made some more, and I’m going to post photos and a little explanation of what I did for them underneath!

Inspired.

Okay so I came across ‘Japan Corner’, located here in this blog. The blog is brilliant… Anyway, I dicovered this post here, and saw that it was a really good idea. I’m quite scared of losing my Filofax, and I think this is a good way to make sure that people see the registration page.

So I created my own…

I used two photos that I took at the Harry Potter Studio Tour – the first quote that you see when entering, and the 1:24 scale model of the castle.

So, this is what I see when I open my Filofax.

The registration page is underneath, and you can see the rectangle cut out on the card of my front page.

So yeah, I think it looks pretty good! And I like to open my Filo up and see this image. So thanks to Sachiko over at Filofax Love for the idea! (Go check her blog out! Awesome drawings/paintings on there.)

Anyway, I also went to Tesco, and picked up some Uni stuff. I managed to get two Oxford notepads that were on offer – a deal I couldn’t resist – and I also got a cute little pencil case and some study cards. These fit well into my Filofax so it’s a win all around.
I found the cat wrapping paper, and figured I could use it maybe as a cover for a divider. It’s cute, and it’s Chococat!

College Exhibition!

I thought this was a very sweet comment. It was written by one of my college friend’s brother, and I’d take a guess that he’s aged between 13-15.

My boards! I know the cloth looks a bit of a mess… this was after the exhibition opening xD

And here’s the close ups.

So yeah, now that’s over and I have officially finished college! It’s weird. I have to go back on 10th July to collect my photos and to get my results… Nervous, but not really that nervous. I already know that I’ve done enough to get into my University course!

And with University, I get to move into my room on 16th September. The welcome week starts on 17th September, so I don’t really get much time to settle in. During that week, I’ll be out on trips, too.

I still actually need to buy quite a lot for Uni. I haven’t got any kitchen stuff, unless I can take some from home. I still need to buy outdoor clothing and some outdoor gear like a compass and that… I’ll have to start doing that when I get back from my holiday…

And I’m going to Turkey tomorrow! I’m so excited.
It’s going to be so beautiful and warm. I’ll be taking so many photos – be warned! I’m going to attempt to document the main parts of the holiday with my film camera… I’m excited for that! It’s like a mini project :3

The Olympics is coming!

Well, the Olympic torch/flame whatever came through my town last week, so we went along to have a look at what was happening. It wasn’t that impressive to be honest, but it was kinda cool to be there. The atmosphere was great, and I liked all the random cars/vans that were with the ‘procession’.
And, here it is…

Snapshot 3

And I thought this little girl looked awesome with her wig :3

So, college will be over soon… The exhibition date is coming closer! Deadline has been and gone, and we’re just getting the room ready now. Tomorrow is the start of the sanding/scrubbing/painting the boards. My photos have all been mounted, so once the boards are done, that’s it! Hoping I can get it done tomorrow/Friday.

On Thursday I’m off to Cumbria University to have a look at their exhibition. It means I can have a look at what they’re doing and what I could possibly be doing next year or at the end of the course. I can’t wait for that.

And Phillip is back on Friday! Perfect end to the week (: 3 weeks is too long!
It’s also the Race For Life on Sunday, and then my cousin’s Christening… So got a busy weekend really. Nervous for the race. Still not sure whether I’ll be running alone or walking with my mum and aunt.

A photo I took last week:

Strange Planets…

My Studio/Reflective Journal project is due in next Friday… I just need to choose my finals.
I’ve gone with ‘Planets’, and so I’ve just got a few of these to choose from. I was thinking these four:

The first two are the same photo, just the right one is flipped and BW… I figured they kind of fit together.
The second two are of similar style, in the fact that they’re vegetables… So I was thinking of doing two sets of two, rather than a set of four that fits together.

What do you think?
Feedback would really be appreciated, thanks!

Blah.

I’ve just been completely loaded up with all this college work. March already, where is the time going?! The End of Year show is getting closer, and the thought of my FMP is scaring me.

I just thought I’d post some photos that I did the other day in the studio. I’m thinking about using these for my finals. I need four images in total for that. I also have two rolls of 120mm film to develop tomorrow, so I may have some good photos on there. (Hopefully!)
It was quite annoying though. The sync leads were being faulty, and I think I managed to waste 7 or 8 shots between the two rolls, because the studio light didn’t flash. Ah well. I think I got what I needed…

It’s strange what you can do with a cabbage leaf…

Polaroids and University.

How sweet? ^^ :3
I love those two.

Anyway, good news! I got a Conditional offer for Sunderland University! I need 220 UCAS points for them to accept me, so that’s easy enough. I’m so pleased. I’m still not sure whether it’s my first choice. I need to see Cumbria before I make my decision, and my interview for there is 14th March.

Suddenly, university doesn’t seem so far away…
