All Stars Guest Post: The Crazy Life of J

As part of the Philofaxy All Stars Tour, I have a post from J over at The Crazy Life of J about photography. Enjoy!

————————-

I’ve always been a writer. I always have, and I always will be. However, I am also a firm believer that a picture can be worth a thousand words. I guess I’m just a hypocrite. Oh well.

Regardless, these days I shoot most of my photos on my iPhone, or on one of my husband’s DSLRs. He’s a professional photographer and photojournalist so there’s no lack of camera gear in our house! As fun as digital can be, my love of photography started long before I ever even knew what a DSLR was. Instead, my fondest photography memories end with me in a darkroom, witnessing the magic of an image appearing on paper.

I took my first photography class in high school – I was hooked from day one. There truly is something powerful about being a part of the process from loading the camera, shooting the film, processing the film, and developing prints. I still have all of my class binders stuffed with negatives and prints that didn’t turn out quite right – I just can’t bring myself to let them go.

I took photography classes through most of high school. Honestly, I spent most of high school hidden away in the darkroom, processing, tweaking, developing, and starting all over again. I loved the frustration of having an image come out not quite right and playing with my chemical levels until they were just right. Color photography always provided an added challenge. In the end, though, getting the right combination of chemicals and timing resulted in a perfect print.

Unfortunately, college was far too rigorous to continue my photography studies so most of my darkroom experience ended after my senior year of high school. I actually do have a full darkroom set up that I purchased years ago, but everywhere I’ve lived has either been too small or too temporary to set it up. I can’t wait for the day that we live in a place large enough and for long enough to have a dedicated dark room space!

Thank you, Katie, for allowing me to share a bit about my love of film photography here on your blog! It has inspired me to do a bit more digging through my old prints – hopefully I’ll get around to sharing a few more over on my blog, The Crazy Life of J!

Now I don’t know about you guys, but I’ve always loved film photography! I started from film in college, and even though I had previously used a digital, the film is what really hooked me into it! I loved snapping away and then developing my own photos. J has shown us some great photos here! I especially love the portrait one myself!

Have you ever been in a darkroom? Or dabbled in film photography?

A long time ago I used to have a darkroom in my flat all set up on a long bench with all the trays and an enlarger. I only ever did black and white, I never attempted to try doing colour.

I still have a film camera (Canon EOS 30) which has some film in at the moment, it’s hard work though compared to digital, but I love using that camera! I also have an Russian 120 roll film camera, I’ve not used that for many years, nice big negatives though!
