Tethers – Jack Croxall (A book review)*

imageWhen I opened an email mentioning a book review, I immediately got excited! I just love to read… Once I’d read the description, I was eager to start reading but had to finish The Great Gatsby first! (I couldn’t really get into that one…!) Of course, I replied quickly that I’d love to review this book, and I’m glad I did!

Tethers is a Young Adult Victorian Fantasy book by Jack Croxall. Croxall has a degree in Environmental Science and works as a science writer as well as working on books. This is his first book, and is the start of a Trilogy.

Book summary:

In the wake of a cold Victorian winter, two teenagers discover an anonymous journal filled with strange passages and bizarre scribblings.
The journal soon draws them into a covert and sinister conspiracy, a conspiracy centred around an otherworldly artefact with the power to change everything …
Karl and Esther have spent almost every day of their thirteen years in the quiet market town of Shraye. Stifled by their rural surroundings and frustrated by their unfulfilled ambitions, they find the allure of the journal’s mysterious pages impossible to ignore. The book seems to be beckoning them away from Shraye, away from their homes and towards the coast where an unsolved disappearance has set in motion a dark chain of events.
The voyage the teenagers soon find themselves undertaking is one of desperate importance and true peril; it will change the way they see the world, and each other, forever.

As soon as I started this book I was drawn in… The characters are interesting, and I just wanted to know more! Karl and Esther are young, and they clearly like ‘adventures’. This curiosity draws them in to something much bigger, something which they didn’t know they would be involved in! I loved the friendship between Karl and Esther – they compliment each other perfectly!

The descriptions in the book were great, and you could just imagine everything that was happening. The writing really made the story come alive. Moreover, the chapters weren’t too long, and it just felt like I was whizzing through the book as I didn’t want to put it down! I would think to myself “Just one more chapter…” and then end up reading about three more before putting my kindle down!

This book is described as suitable for ages 10+ and I certainly agree that it is great for younger readers. The story is easy to get into and to understand, and also contains bits of mystery that you just want to figure out! That said, I am 20 and I thoroughly enjoyed it, so don’t just think that it is for younger people! If you enjoy fantasy stories, then you will enjoy this one!

Sequel? Yes please!
