Parade to the Pool campaign! *

I recently found out about the ‘Parade to the Pool’ campaign, fronted by Sculpture ambassador Gabby Logan. The aim of this campaign was to encourage women to stop talking negatively about their bodies, and to give them the confidence to walk out in swimwear. 79% of women stated that they didn’t know a female who is happy with their body, and 84% of women admitted that they put their bodies down with negative talk*. This is something that I believe is important, as the media causes us to judge ourselves too harshly, thus confidence is lost in a lot of women. Having actually been swimming tonight (my mum and I try to go once a week!) I know how uncomfortable some people can be when getting from the changing rooms and into the pool!

It can be contagious and its easy to spread and reinforce negative messages amongst ourselves; resulting in avoidance behavior around exposing our bodies. The good news is that we can take control and shift our mindset from negative to positive thinking. When you change how you think it will change the way you feel, and the way you behave.” – Anjula Mutanda, Psychologist.

imageThe Parade to the Pool campaign took place on June 4th 2013, and had four members of the public take part in a swimwear parade, walking from the Speedo store in Covent Garden to a local swimming pool. These women were given personal coaching from a psychologist in order to help them with their body anxieties. They were given Speedo Sculture swimsuits, designed to shape and sculpt the body. This would be a big challenge – to walk out in the public eye in just swimwear, without being anxious or ashamed of their bodies. Of the people surveyed, nearly 90% agreed that talking positively about their bodies helped them to be more confident in themselves and had a positive effect on their body image. If the media didn’t put out the message that they do, we wouldn’t have a problem with ‘fat talk’! It’d would be great to see more things like this campaign to help change the views of the public!

This Speedo Sculpture swimwear is designed to help women feel comfortable and confident in their bodies. With the figures shown above, it is clear that a lot of women need help in regaining their confidence, and ditching the body issues! The swimsuits were made by analysing the bodies of over 5,400 different women to create something that worked for every shape. I see and hear lots of people worrying about what they look like in swimwear, and you always see the ‘bikini body’ articles in magazines and on the internet. We need to start accepting bodies for what they are – there is no ‘perfect’. What do you think about this? Are you body-positive, or do you suffer from the bad thinking?
